What books are on your nightstand?

Would you like a particular book to appear on my nightstand? I'm currently accepting nominations.

  1. I nominate The Places in Between by Rory Stewart for your book pile.
Clearly and beautifully written, its a troublesome and troubling book
    and an amazing story.

  2. I nominate The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto. Though it criminally neglects the activities of the august Van Dorlandt family, it is a really interesting look at the dynamics of the Dutch colony of New Netherlands, and particularly Manhattan, in the seventeeth century. Most important, it makes use of materials that were recently discovered and are only now being translated, about one colonist's attempt to institute a form of representative government in the colony.
